In light of recent tragedies – the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and too many others – that are a continuation of systemic problems that have been going on throughout history, it is important that we commit to anti-racism in the Geosciences and daily life. This is an action that is long overdue. It is also important that we reflect on and acknowledge the ways in which the Geosciences (and academia more broadly) have been built on structural racism and how structural racism pervades our everyday lives. We do this not only because it is the right thing to do, but also because science and society benefit from diverse viewpoints and lived experiences.
